GOP immigration bills backed by Trump appear headed for defeat

A pair of Republican-crafted bills on immigration appeared headed for defeat Thursday in the GOP-led House, despite backing by President Trump and haunting images of migrant children separated from their parents at the border.

At a late-morning news conference, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) did not concede defeat but repeatedly referenced the prospect of both bills failing and characterized scheduled votes Thursday afternoon as “a legitimate exercise.”
